Why abbreviations should not be neglected

Posted by:

Besides the words themselves, abbreviations are also an important component of a language. But in order for them to fulfil their purpose, it is essential to understand their meaning.

Each language has a large number of abbreviations and most of them are pretty well-known, such as etc. – et cetera.

A special form of abbreviation is the acronym. Acronyms are short words consisting of the initials of several words. Well-known examples to mention here are FAQ – frequently asked questions or NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Famous brand names often have a deeper meaning too. Thus the sports brand Adidas got its name from the company founder Adolf Dassler (in accordance with his nickname Adi and the first three letters of his surname).

Rather difficult are words that we do not even suspect to be an abbreviation. Or did you know that the word Laser actually is the short version for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation?

By means of the given examples you can see that abbreviations are an important component of the terminology of a language and that their importance, especially in translations, should not be underestimated. That is one of the reasons why all partners of GCBG manage and expand the terminology of their customers and hence guarantee the compliance with the corporate wording of their customers.
